I learned to practice yoga and meditation from my father while growing up in India. Through a lifetime of practice, I've learned that yoga has the power to transform our bodies and our minds.
Yoga is a spiritual and mental practice, in addition to a physical one. Yoga originated in ancient Indian civilization (around 3000 BCE). Since then, it has gone through many incarnations. It was not until the sixth century B.C. that the physical poses (called "asanas") and meditation became critical elements.
In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a system of physical exercise across the Western world in the form of "Hatha yoga." Modern yoga is based on five basic principles defined by Swami Sivananda of India who was one of the most prolific yoga teachers in history. They are: serve, love, give, purify, meditate and realize.
A few of the benefits of practicing yoga are: increased strength and flexibility, increased relaxation, more effective breathing, stress reduction and improved concentration.
And recent studies support the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart disease.
